If you love to watch costumes in movies and find yourself pausing the VCR to get a good look at a costume… then pull the couch, TV, VCR, and computer all into one room for six weeks. I have been studying these four films for years… they are my favorites. I have watched them hundreds of times, picked them apart, and studied the pre-WWI fashions extensively. Each film holds a special place in my heart for different reasons. When you finish this class, you will come out with a whole new perspective, the next time you watch a movie and its costumes. DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS: The purpose of this class is to compare and contrast costumes of five classic films set between 1912-1914. The students will be assigned a film to watch each week. Students will be given weekly assignments as to certain scenes in that week's film. During the week, the students and instructor will have question and answer discussion sessions via message-board about given aspects of that week's film. Students will be taught how to research each film's costume designer and reviews of when the movie premiered. The students will identify costume color themes and how they flow through out the films. Attention will be paid to authenticity of the period fashion vs. the films' costumes. How close did the designers come to recreating the real fashions of 1912-1914? Questions will be raised as to why certain characters' costumes where designed in a given style. Emphasis will be placed on the characters' status vs. the costume. There will be an overall comparison of the films' costumes in respect to their designers, historical fashion accuracy, color themes, and film stars' influence on current fashion at the original show dates.
