Beginning Embroidery:
Techniques Used in the Past:
Part 2

Class Description

This class is designed to expand the knowledge base of the basic embroiderer in a variety of stitches for various styles and techniques of embroidery.

The class is structured around the Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences Inc., Instruction Paper with Examination Questions, Embroidery Stitches Part 1 and 2, by Mary Brooks Picken. This 1920 work is an excellent primer on embroidery. Alongside the excerpted text from the book we will be presenting some of the modern alternatives that may make the stitching a little easier. For clarity, excerpts from the book will be presented in italics. Full citation for the work is as follows: Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences, Inc., Department of Sewing. Instruction Paper With Examination Questions - Embroidery Stitches Part 1, 7A, by Mary Brooks Picken. Scranton PA. 1916, 1920.

The class will be geared toward students who have a basic understanding of embroidery. We will focus on teaching the students more advanced embroidery stitches and how to use them in various designs.

For purposes of this class, students should know how to prepare fabric for the hoop, use an embroidery hoop (or other choice of tension device), and execute basic embroidery stitches such as the cross stitch, running stitch, double running stitch, French knots, basic satin stitch and chain stitch. If you are unsure of your skill level as compared to the class, please feel free to contact me.
