Beginning Embroidery:
Techniques Used in the Past:
Part 1

Class Syllabus

The class is structured around the Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences Inc., Instruction Paper with Examination Questions, Embroidery Stitches Part 1, by Mary Brooks Picken. This 1920 work is an excellent primer on embroidery. Alongside the excerpted text from the book we will be presenting some of the modern alternatives that may make the stitching a little easier. For clarity, excerpts from the book will be presented in italics. Embroidery patterns from the 19th Century in our Online Libary will be used in this class.

The first lesson we’ll be discussing the basics to prepare everyone for their sojourn to their local needlework shop, craft store or discount store to gather supplies. Students are encouraged to choose their own colors, etc. for the design they are creating. Embroidery like all art forms is a form of personal expression - we’ll be focusing on proper execution of stitches, and since you’re going to be looking quite intently at what you’re doing, color choice is left to students. As this is an introduction class on the subject, we’ll be focusing on the more inexpensive and easily obtained fibers and other necessary items. There’s good basic equipment that can be purchased very reasonably for a “trying-it-out” class as this one is designed.

The second lesson we’ll learn how to get our project ready for working. We’ll look at transferring the pattern, how to set up your hoop, etc. During week two we’ll also be discussing more expensive and/or advanced equipment that can be used for embroidery projects.

The third and fourth lessons will focus on a set of beginning stitches for the student to learn. We’ll be going step by step through each stitch so students will understand how things like angle of the needle entering the fabric, can make a difference in the way the stitch looks.

In the fourth lesson we’ll also be discussing ways to use and show off your new embroidery skill!

Throughout the class students will be encouraged to post any questions, comments, or ideas to the discussion board for the class. I’ve taught a lot of basic embroidery classes and in each one I have learned some new trick of the trade to make things easier, because the student who came up with it was looking at embroidery through new eyes!

Advice to the Student

Study a few pages at a time and in consecutive order. Pay particular attention to the definitions; a correct understanding of them is essential. If you do not understand any of the statements or if you meet with difficulties of any kind, write to us for assistance. It is our desire to aid you in every way possible.

After you have studied the entire Section, review the whole subject, then write your answers to the Examination Questions at the end of this Paper. All that is necessary is to give the answers and write in front of each the number of the question to which it refers.
