19th Century Parasols: Their History, Construction, and Restoration CLASS DESCRIPTION |
Nothing is as lovely as a feminine parasol as a finishing touch to your 19th Century ensemble. The parasol was a coveted item in a lady's 19th Century wardrobe. If you already have that lovely 19th Century gown and are looking to finish your gown with a parasol to match or one to accentuate it, then this is the class for you. In lesson #1 you will learn the history of the parasol. You will examine photos of period parasols in my collection, and view other parasols through online links. We will also cover articles in ladies' magazines from the Victorian and
Edwardian periods. You will learn how to turn an inexpensive nylon umbrella into a beautiful period-correct accessory that will match any outfit that you choose! You will learn how to work with ferrules, handles, frames, and even change the covers to make different patterns. You will also learn how to make a parasol cover from scratch when one does not exist! We will also cover how, and when to restore period parasols. You will need to have some basic sewing skills with a sewing machine or by hand. Pre-1860 parasols were all hand-sewn. So, my idea is if they can, so can you! The only other thing you need is time and patience. I hope to see you in class! |
