Basic Corsetry for Young Women, 1850-1865

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Once a young woman’s figure begins to develop, she needs an historically appropriate supportive undergarment! For the 1850-1865 era, this means a corset or stays, fitted to her unique figure needs. A well-fitted set will keep you comfortable and appropriate in all historic settings.

In this class, you’ll learn a completely modern method to an historic result: using duct tape or packing tape to make a custom-fitted corset pattern! You’ll also learn fitting and construction techniques, what changes to expect during the teen years (ages 12-20), and what materials are the most practical for corsetry.

This class can be completed without pre-ordering traditional corset supplies (you’ll make decisions regarding your final corset materials early on, and can order them in at that point.)

You will need basic hand or machine sewing skills to get the most out of this workshop, and either the young woman herself for draping and fitting, or a body-duplicate dress form.
