A Fitting Image: Regency Clothing in Fashion Plates

CLASS DESCRIPTION

The recent movies based on Jane Austen’s novels and popular fiction such as the Regency romance genre have reawakened popular interest in the famous “Regency” period. The term “Regency” has come to mean much more than the actual span of the future George IV’s term as Prince Regent and usually evokes images of elegant, slim ladies in white Grecian style clothing.

While white was undoubtedly a common color, the fashion palette was not limited to it, and we will discuss options shown in the ladies’ fashion publications. While Austen adaptations have immortalized the high-waisted columnar look, the students will be taught how to look for the little details such as skirt length or width, which will enable them to correctly place the fashion plate on the time scale.
