History of Bonnets

Bonnet: #4
Date: Early 19th Century

This lady wears a chip bonnet with a pale, faded looking satin ribbon as a trimming. The edge of the brim has a white taffeta ruche round it and the crown is surmounted by a plume of three white marabout feathers; all were popular combinations at the time. This is really a grotesque shape: add four wheels at the base and a little smoke from the top of the crown, and the resemblance to a railway steam engine would be complete.
