Need your photos analyzed? Click here to visit our Fashion Foto-date

Welcome to another presentation of vintage photographs from The Costume Gallery Collection. "A Brush with History" is a series of vintage photographs that we have analyzed what the photographed person's fashions and hairstyles were. From this analysis, we determine a "Fashion Foto-date". This is a hypothesis of a circa date, a five year span, of when the photo was taken.

Our series will begin by highlighting 12 little girls with long hairstyles. The girls' photos date between 1874-1914 according to their "Fashion Foto-date" (fashions that they are wearing.) There are two groups of six girls. Under child #6 photo on the left, there is a NEXT button. Click on the button and the second group will appear on the left side of your screen.

Notice on the left, there is a group of small photos, we call this a menu. Scroll down the thumbnails (small photos) and you will see all the photos in this group. There are six photos in this group. If you want to see the enlarged photo and descriptions of the thumbnail, click on it. In the large area on your screen will appear an enlargement of the photo with the Foto-date and details about the hairstyle, and costume. At this moment, there are twelve girls' photos to view. So please make sure to scroll down both complete menu.

If you would like a photo analyzed and dated, please go to our Fashion Foto-date website.

Disclaimer:The photos located on this website, "A Brush with History: Vintage Hairstyles," are property of The Costume Gallery collection. They may not be reproduced in any manner without written permission from Penny E. Ladnier, owner of The Costume Gallery. The circa dates given for the photos are an educated guess, from analyzing the fashions worn in the photo. When an actual date is provided on the photo, that date will be included in the identification marks section. The location stated by the studio may be a clue as to where this photo was taken. Please take it as a clue. Many photographers traveled to locations and took photographs… meaning that the photo may not have been taken in the same city or town as the address of the studio.
